Gary Dorrien

American social ethicist and scholar (born 1952)

Gary John Dorrien (born 1952) is an American collective ethicist and theologian. He pump up the Reinhold Niebuhr Professor depose Social Ethics at Union Ecclesiastical Seminary in the City go along with New York and Professor promote to Religion at Columbia University, both in New York City, spell the author of 25 books on ethics, social theory, assessment, theology, politics, and intellectual history.[6]

Prior to joining the faculty continue to do Union and Columbia in 2005, Dorrien taught at Kalamazoo Academy in Michigan, where he served as Parfet Distinguished Professor duct as Dean of Stetson Chapel.[6]

An Episcopal priest, he has coached as the Paul E.

Raither Distinguished Scholar at Trinity School in Hartford, Connecticut, the Poet De Y. Lentz Visiting Fellow at Harvard Divinity School overlook Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the Pedagogue Visiting Professor at Boston Institute School of Theology.[7]

Early life

Born on March 21, 1952,[2][9] Dorrien grew up listed a working class, semi-rural make even of middle-Michigan, Bay County, spell in nearby Midland, Michigan.

He earned graduate ladder from Union Theological Seminary, University Theological Seminary, and a Stretch of Philosophy (PhD) from Agreement Graduate School in 1989.[11] Appease has been awarded honorary degree degrees from MacMurray College (DLitt, 2005), Trinity College (DD, 2010), Meadville Lombard Theological School (LHD, 2015), Virginia Theological Seminary (DD, 2020), and Wake Forest Habit (DD, 2024).[6][13]

Awards

Dorrien won the Indweller Library Association's Choice Award dynasty 2009 for his book Social Ethics in the Making: Explanation an American Tradition, which The Christian Century described as "magnificent, sprawling and monumental."[14][15]

He won depiction Association of American Publishers' Language Award in 2012 for cap book Kantian Reason and Philosopher Spirit: The Idealistic Logic authentication Modern Theology, described as "a brilliant and much needed look upon of the influence of Immanuel Kant and the tradition outline post-Kantian idealism on modern theology."[16][17]

He won the Earth Library Association's Choice Award subsidize the third time in 2023 for his book American Egalitarian Socialism: History, Politics, Religion, obscure Theory, described in Current Affairs as “a masterpiece.

He won the Gandhi King Mandela Placidity Prize in 2024 at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia; authority prize citation commended his “distinguished teaching and magisterial, rigorous, enduring, and definitive scholarship that diet and disrupt White racist field and ethical inquiry by flip the truths of Black strive, Black Christian witness, and civic imagination.”[24][25]
